Blaz Kavcic and Donald Young meet in the first round of the 2014 US Open on Monday.
Blaz Kavcic enters this tournament on a three match losing streak, but he’s been holding his own throughout the season. Kavcic reached the finals of the Nanchang Challenger, while winning the Tianjin Challenger and Fergana Challenger. Kavcic is slowly regaining his form and should be fairly confident he can compete in the opening match of the US Open. However, Kavcic’s last two matches were losses to Nicolas Mahut and Benjamin Becker in straight sets. Not exactly the best performances we’ve seen from the Slovenian. As far as grand slam history is concerned, Blaz Kavcic doesn’t have much success as he’s never made it out of the first round of the US Open and has failed to qualify in two of his last three grand slam appearances.

Donald Young has stayed busy to prepare himself for this tournament, as he reached the semifinals of the Citi Open and played singles and doubles in Winston-Salem. Young’s last match was a loss against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, which went three sets and needed two tiebreaks to be decided. Donald Young has had an OK season and his success in the Citi Open turned some heads, as his most impressive win came over the favored Kevin Anderson. Now Young would like some grand slam success, as he’s been eliminated in the second round or earlier in the last two US Open’s and had a disappointing showing in this year’s Wimbledon. Along with John Isner, Donald Young will be a crowd favorite at this tournament.
The only previous meeting between these two came back in the 2011 Delray Beach qualifying, a match that Blaz Kavcic won in straight sets.
The past match three years ago really holds no weight, as Donald Young is a much better and experienced player than he was back then. Young will have the crowd behind him and he’s simply an overall better tennis player than Kavcic is right now.
Take Donald Young as long as you think the price is fair.
