TV: ESPN, CBS, Tennis

Angelique Kerber and Belinda Bencic will square off in the third round of the 2014 US Open.

At the young age of 17 years old, Belinda Bencic has once again reached the third round of a major, as she also appeared in the third round of this year’s Wimbledon. Bencic’s second round victory came in a three set match against Kurumi Nara. Bencic was in control for pretty much the entire match, hitting 23 winners and keeping her first serve in the mid 90s throughout all three sets. The one thing Belinda Bencic has to clean up are her 41 unforced errors, which simply aren’t going to fly if she hopes to advance any further in this tournament. Overall, Bencic continues to struggle with consistency at such a young age but she continues to make a name for herself in the majors as one of the top young tennis players in the world.

Angelique Kerber vs. Belinda Bencic 2014 US Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Angelique Kerber’s two-set victory over Alla Kudryavtseva needed only 18 games to be decided and didn’t take much time at all. Kerber breezed through the match by winning nearly 70 percent of her first serve points and limiting herself to only 13 unforced errors. Kerber’s win here was a much cleaner performance than her first round match against Ksenia Pervak. Despite some success at Wimbledon and an impressive showing at Stanford, Angelique Kerber has struggled to find her form lately but seems to have found her groove again in her last two matches at the US Open. Of course, Kerber is no stranger to major success, as she did reach the semifinal of this tournament a couple of years ago and has reached at least the fourth round of the US Open in three straight years.

This will be the first meeting between these two players.

I really like Belinda Bencic’s game and think she is one of a handful one young tennis players who has the potential to be big time. However, Kerber has light years more experience than the 17-year-old and should be able to pull away. It will be closer than most think, but pick Kerber to get the victory and advance once again.
