Shuai Peng and Roberta Vinci will meet in the third round of the US Open.

Shuai Peng pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the tournament by defeating Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets. Peng pretty much dominated the match by hitting 28 winners, winning 69 percent of her net points and serving close to 100 mph on her first attempt. Shuai Peng hasn’t had a great season and has been more successful playing doubles, but she looked sharp against a formidable opponent in Radwanska and is more than capable of a deeper run if she can continue to play at the same level in this match. Shuai Peng has never had great success at grand slams, and this is the first time she’s reached the third round of the US Open since 2011. However, in two matches in this tournament, Peng has only lost 13 games.

Shuai Peng vs. Roberta Vinci 2014 US Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

Roberta Vinci overcame losing the first set and was able to defeat Irina-Camelia Begu in a long match that took 25 games to be decided. There was little consistency in two of the three sets and it wasn’t Vinci’s best performance by a long shot. In the victory, Roberta Vinci managed to land just 55 percent of her first serves, had five double faults and only four winners. The performance was a far cry from her first round match against Paula Ormaechea. Still, a win is a win and Vinci will take it at 31 years old. You still have to worry about her consistency, as Vinci has lost four of her last seven single matches overall. However, Roberta Vinci does carry some major experience in this tournament and has reached the quarterfinals of the US Open in each of the last two years.

These two have played each other twice and the series is split. Shuai Peng won their most recent match in the 2012 Cincinnati Masters, while Roberta Vinci won their 2007 meeting in Tokyo. Of course, Peng’s victory came the only time these two faced on hard court.

Overall, I think Shuai Peng’s monster second round victory creates a letdown spot here. Roberta Vinci has the edge in experience and has yet to play her best tennis in this tournament.

Give me Vinci for the victory.
