Sara Errani and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni will meet in the fourth round of the 2014 US Open.

Sara Errani was able to win an impressive three-set match over Venus Williams that was an up-and-down match throughout. Errani won the first set 6-0, lost the second set 0-6 and came back to win the third set in a tiebreak despite trailing at one point 3-5. It was really a hard fought victory from Sara Errani, a match in which she won 79 percent of her net points, successfully broke on six of her nine attempts and landed her first serve in 89 percent of the time. This is a different Errani than what we saw in new Heaven and the Cincinnati Masters, as she appears to be in much better form and has more confidence. Errani will look to reach her second major quarterfinal of the season, as she reached the quarterfinal of this year’s French Open.

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni also pulled off an upset in the third round by sending home Simona Halep in straight sets. The first set was a tiebreak victory, and then she cruised in the second by winning, 6-2. Lucic-Baroni played a hell of a match by hitting 31 winners, winning 75 percent of her net points and averaging a first serve speed of over 100 mph. Although successful many moons ago, this success from Mirjana Lucic-Baroni is a surprise, as she hasn't reached the fourth round or further of a major since the 1999 Wimbledon. In fact, Lucic-Baroni has been eliminated in the second round or earlier in her last eight major appearances. It’s been consistent poor performances from Lucic-Baroni all season long in both singles and doubles, but these three straight upset wins clearly prove she still has a little something left in the tank.

These two have faced each other only once, which was a 2010 meeting in Palermo, a match that Sara Errani won in straight sets. This will obviously be the first time the two have played on hard court.

While the comeback story of Mirjana Lucic-Baroni has been cool to see, Sara Errani is simply in another zone and won’t be denied. She’s hitting her winners and has been a pitbull in her last few matches that refuses to go away.

Errani will win a close match.
