Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka will meet in the 2014 quarterfinals of the US Open.

Kei Nishikori won a marathon match against Milos Raonic to become the first Japanese player to advance to the quarterfinals of the US Open. It was a hard fought five set match where Nishikori hit eight aces, won 68 percent of his net points and hit 53 winners. Nishikori has always been a crafty player who makes incredible shots, but he’s playing with more confidence and seems to know that this tournament could finally be the turning point in his career at the young age of 24. Nishikori has now won 11 of his last 14 matches, and two of those three losses came from Milos Raonic and Roger Federer. Kei Nishikori is as healthy as he’s been all season and is quickly becoming one of the more dangerous players on tour. Nishikori’s only other quarterfinals appearance in a major was the 2012 Australian Open.

Kei Nishikori vs. Stan Wawrinka 2014 US Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

Stan Wawrinka hasn’t had to play much tennis in this tournament due to the withdraw of Blaz Kavcic, but he did beat Tommy Robredo in four sets in his most recent match. In the victory, Wawrinka hit 18 aces, won 74 percent of his net points and hit an incredible 75 winners. Like Nishikori, Wawrinka looks to be in incredible form and on a mission to make up for an up-and-down and somewhat disappointing season. Sure, Wawrinka won the Australian Open, but he’s been shaky since the Wimbledon. Now, Stan Wawrinka has won six of his last seven matches overall and is back to making his crafty shots that he was missing before this tournament began. Wawrinka has only surpassed the quarterfinals of a major twice in his career.

Surprisingly, these two have never played one another on the tennis court.

This is going to be a must watch game if you’re a fan of tennis, as they both have a similar game and are capable of hitting dazzling winners anywhere on the court. And while Wawrinka has the advantage in experience and rest, this is by far a bigger moment for Kei Nishikori, and I think he captures it.

Nishikori moves onto the semis for the first time in his career.
