Marin Cilic and Tomas Berdych will play in the 2014 US Open quarterfinals.

Marin Cilic continues his solid play this season, as he returns to his second straight quarterfinal major. Cilic is coming off his toughest match yet, which was a five set victory over Gilles Simon, a match that he bounced back after dropping the first set. In the victory, Cilic hit 23 aces, won 81 percent of his first serve points and had 70 winners. Cilic is on fire with his serve in this tournament, as he averaged a first serve speed of 121 mph in his latest match and is nearly automatic when he gets his first serve in play. Marin Cilic has now won eight of his last 10 singles matches and his only two losses came from Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer, two players who are still alive in the tournament. Cilic has only reached one major semifinal in his career, which was the 2010 Australian Open.

Marin Cilic vs. Tomas Berdych 2014 US Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

Besides a second round match against Martin Klizan, Tomas Berdych has cruised through this tournament and hasn’t dropped a set. Berdych’s most recent win came against Dominic Thiem, a match that took just 25 games to be decided. In the victory, Berdych had 10 aces, won 85 percent of his first serve points and hit 24 winners. Berdych is another player who has been lights out with his serve and is nearly unbreakable when he’s getting his first serve in play at a high percentage. Berdych is also moving well and covering more ground than I’ve seen in the past. He certainly isn’t the same player he was in Cincinnati or Canada. Tomas Berdych hopes to return to the US Open semifinals for the second time in three years.

These two players have played each other eight times in the past and Tomas Berdych leads the series, 5-3. They’ve played each other twice this year and Marin Cilic won their match in the Wimbledon, while Berdych won in Rotterdam. Their last four matches have been decided in straight sets. This will be the fifth time these two have played on hard court.

This is going to be a great match if you love powerful serves. There aren't going to be many breaks in this one. This is really a toss up because the margin for error is slim for both players. However, I think Tomas Berdych is in better form and he has more experience in these type of matches.
