Garbine Muguruza and Lucie Safarova meet Wednesday in the quarterfinal of the 2015 French Open.
Garbine Muguruza has dropped just one set in this tournament and is coming off a straight set victory over Flavia Pennetta. Muguruza has played no more than 26 games in a single match and has no tiebreaks. Muguruza has won at least 61 percent of her first serve points and has hit 63 winners in her last two matches. Muguruza is coming off a match in which she won 60 percent of her second serve points. However, while playing well overall, Muguruza needs to be sharper if she hopes to keep advancing, as she’s committed 72 unforced errors in her last two matches. Muguruza has never reached the semifinal of a major in her young career.
USA TODAY Sports
Lucie Safarova has yet to drop a set in this tournament and is coming off an upset win over Maria Sharapova. Safarova has played no more than 26 games in a match and has won all four tiebreaks. Safarova has won at least 70 percent of her first serve points and has hit 57 winners in her last two matches. Safarova has 21 aces in this tournament and has had 22 or less unforced errors in her last three matches. Safarova is playing some of her best tennis right now and has to have extreme confidence coming off her victory over one of the top players in the world. Safarova must continue going for her winners, but she does have eight double faults in her last two matches. Safarova looks to reach her second major semifinal, as he first came in last year’s Wimbledon.
These two have never played one another in the past.
Both are playing extremely well and this may be the biggest match of both of their careers. However, Safarova is in slightly better form, has more experience and has possibly the best win of the tournament so far.
Muguruza is picking up valuable experience at just 21 year’s old, but I think her run at the French Open comes to an end.
