Stan Wawrinka and Fernando Verdasco meet Friday in the third round of the 2015 Wimbledon.
Stan Wawrinka is coming off a straight sets victory over Victor Estrella Burgos, which took an hour and a half. Wawrinka is getting at least 54 percent of his first serves in play and has won at least 82 percent of those points. Wawrinka is winning at least 62 percent of his second serve points and has nine total double faults. Wawrinka has combined for 40 aces, 84 winners and 59 unforced errors in his first two matches. Wawrinka has looked sharp in his first two matches but needs to do a better job of getting his first serve in play. After all, Wawrinka did have six double faults in his last match, a number that must improve. Wawrinka hasn’t been bounced in the third round of a grand slam since the 2012 Australian Open.

Fernando Verdasco is coming off a five set match against Dominic Thiem, which took a little over three hours. Verdasco is getting at least 54 percent of his first serves in play and has won at least 81 percent of those points. Verdasco is winning at least 53 percent of his second serve points and has 22 total double faults. Verdasco has combined for 44 aces, 128 winners and 80 unforced errors in his first two matches. Verdasco is doing a great job of hitting his spots and finding ways to win long matches. However, he’s making way too many unforced errors and has already played 10 sets this tournament. Verdasco has advanced to the fourth round of a grand slam just twice since 2012, once which was the 2013 Wimbledon.
These two have met three times, and Verdasco has won two of those meetings. The most recent match was in 2012 in Acapulco, a match Verdasco won in straight sets. Wawrinka’s only win came in the 2005 Swiss Open. This is the first time these two play on grass.
You have to give Verdasco somewhat of a chance to pull off the upset given the history. However, the fatigue factor highly favors Wawrinka, and Wawa is a far better player than when these two met in the past.
