Philipp Kohlschreiber and Roger Federer meet Saturday in the third round of the 2015 US Open.
Philipp Kohlschreiber is coming off a straight sets win over Lukas Rosol and has played eight sets in two matches. Kohlschreiber is winning at least 64 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. Kohlschreiber has combined for 35 winners, 17 unforced errors and 14 aces in his first two matches. Besides a long match in the first round against Alexander Zverev, Kohlschreiber has really played some solid tennis and has made very little errors overall. Kohlschreiber should be confident heading into this match. Kohlschreiber has reached the fourth round in each of his last three US Open appearances. Kohlschreiber has reached at least the fourth round in six grand slam appearances since 2012.
USA TODAY Sports
Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Steve Darcis and has played just six sets in his first two matches. Federer has won at least 84 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Federer has combined for 75 winners, 38 unforced errors and 22 aces in his first two matches. Federer continues to play some of his best tennis of the season and is finishing matches quickly, which will only help moving forward. Federer has played just 45 games in his first two matches, which helps with his fatigue in later matches. Federer has been eliminated in the third round or earlier just twice in a grand slam since 2005. Year 2000 was the only time Federer didn’t reach at least the fourth round of the US Open.
These two have played nine times in the past and Federer has won all nine matches. The most recent match was in this year’s Gerry Weber Open, a match that went three sets and two tiebreaks. Kohlschreiber has won just two career sets against Federer, and this will be the fourth time they meet on hard court.
Kohlschreiber is capable of winning a set if he continues to play clean tennis. However, it’s impossible not to pick Federer to win this match. He’s playing easily the best tennis I’ve seen from him in a while.
