Victoria Azarenka and Angelique Kerber meet Saturday in the third round of the 2015 US Open.
Victoria Azarenka is coming off a straight sets win over Yanina Wickmayer and has played four sets in her first two matches. Azarenka is winning at least 61 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Azarenka has combined for 26 winners, 32 unforced errors and one ace in her first two matches. Azarenka still seems to be finding her form, as she’s struggling with her second serve and has racked up many errors early. Still, Azarenka has lost just 12 games and should be well rested for this match. Azarenka has reached at least the fourth round in five of her last seven grand slam appearances. Azarenka hasn’t been bounced before the fourth round of the US Open since 2011.

Angelique Kerber is coming off a straight sets win over Karin Knapp and has played four sets in her first two matches. Kerber is winning at least 70 percent of her first serve points and 41 percent of her second serve points. Kerber has combined for 36 winners, two aces and 39 unforced errors in her first two matches. Kerber has simply dominated her first two matches and is doing a great job with her first serve. Kerber should be confident heading into this match with the way she’s playing right now. Kerber hasn’t made it out of the third round of a grand slam since the 2014 Wimbledon. Kerber has made at least the fourth round in three of her last four US Open appearances.
These two have met four times in the past, and Azarenka has won all four of those matches. The most recent meeting was in this year’s Qatar Total Open, a match Azarenka won in straight sets. Kerber has won just one set against Azarenka, and this will be the fifth time they meet on hard court.
Kerber is a decent bet as an underdog if you’re looking for value. However, Azarenka usually thrives at the US Open and has dominated Kerber throughout her career.
Azarenka has to be the pick here.
