Marin Cilic and Jeremy Chardy meet in the fourth round of the 2015 US Open.
Marin Cilic is coming off a five set win over Mikhail Kukushkin and has played 11 sets this tournament. Cilic is winning at least 76 percent of his first serve points and 55 percent of his second serve points. Cilic has combined for 59 aces, 138 winners and 79 unforced errors in his first three matches. Cilic was able to dig deep in his last match and find a way to win. Cilic must improve his service game, as he’s getting no more than 58 percent of his first serves in play. Still, Cilic’s shotmaking ability gives him a chance against anybody in the field. Cilic has reached at least the quarterfinals of a grand slam three times since 2014. A win here would make three straight quarterfinal appearances at the US Open for Cilic.

Jeremy Chardy is coming off a four-set win over David Ferrer and has played 11 sets in this tournament overall. Chardy is winning at least 69 percent of his first serve points and 46 percent of his second serve points. Chardy has produced 32 aces, 80 winners and 90 unforced errors in his first three matches. Chardy has done a solid job with his service game and is hitting his shots when he needs to. However, Chardy has combined for 86 unforced errors in his last two matches, a number that must be cleaned up if he hopes to advance. Chardy’s only quarterfinal appearance in a grand slam came in the 2013 Australian Open. This is the furthest Chardy has reached at the US Open.
Cilic and Chardy have played twice, and each has won one of those matches. Cilic beat Chardy in the 2014 Wimbledon, and Chardy beat Cilic in the 2009 BMW Open. This will be the first time Cilic and Chardy meet on hard court.
Overall, it’s hard to bet against Cilic who is a better shotmaker than Chardy and has far more experience and success at this stage. The defending US Open champion moves on to the quarters.
