Kristina Mladenovic and Roberta Vinci meet Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the 2015 US Open.
Kristina Mladenovic is coming off a three set win over Ekaterina Makarova and has played nine sets overall. Mladenovic is winning at least 72 percent of her first serve points and 37 percent of her second serve points. Mladenovic has combined for 13 aces, 90 winners and 65 unforced errors in her last three matches. Mladenovic has shown great composure for someone who is new to the big stage and is simply dominating play when she gets her first serve inbounds. Mladenovic is coming off a match where she had 39 winners, and she’s gaining confidence by the second. Mladenovic has never been this far in a grand slam, as her previous best run were many trips to the third round.
USA TODAY Sports
Roberta Vinci advanced to the quarters after Eugenie Bouchard suffered a concussion and wasn’t able to play, so she’s played just eight sets overall. Vinci is winning at least 63 percent of her first serve points and 36 percent of her second serve points. Vinci has combined for 11 aces, 63 winners and 74 unforced errors in her first three matches. Vinci has to do better on her service game, as she’s won no more than 67 percent of her first serve points and 57 percent of her second serve points. However, Vinci is well rested for this match after not having to play in the fourth round, giving her a huge advantage. This is Vinci’s third time playing in the US Open quarterfinals. Vinci has never played in the semifinals of a grand slam.
Mladenovic and Vinci have never played each other in the past.
This is a tough match to predict, as Vinci has the experience and a clear rest advantage on her side. However, Mladenovic is really taking her game to another level and grew up in her last match when things could have gotten out of hand after dropping the second set.
I give the edge to Mladenovic.
