Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka meet Friday in the semifinals of the 2015 US Open.
Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Richard Gasquet and has played 15 sets this tournament. Federer is winning at least 72 percent of his first serve points and 47 percent of his second serve points. Federer has combined for 36 aces, 132 winners and 63 unforced errors in his last three matches. Federer has simply cruised through this tournament, as he has yet to drop a set and has played just two tiebreaks. Federer is also coming off a match that took just an hour and a half to finish. Federer has 105 winners in his last two matches and has simply been in a zone since winning in Cincinnati. Federer has been eliminated in the semifinal of a grand slam three times since 2013. Stan Wawrinka is coming off a straight sets win over Kevin Anderson and has played 16 sets this tournament. Wawrinka is winning at least 75 percent of his first serve points and 49 percent of his second serve points. Wawrinka has combined for 25 aces, 118 winners and 95 unforced errors in his last three matches. Wawrinka has been tough to beat when getting his first serve in play, and he has 40-plus winners in four of his five matches. Wawrinka is also easily coming off his cleanest match in which he had just 15 unforced errors. Some may say Wawrinka is just getting better as we get deeper in this tournament. Wawrinka has lost twice in a grand slam semifinal in his career. Wawrinka hopes to reach his third grand slam final since 2014 and his first ever at the US Open.
These two have played 19 times, and Federer has beaten Wawrinka 16 of those times. The most recent meeting was in this year's French Open, a match Wawrinka won in straight sets. In fact, two of Wawrinka’s three victories over Federer have come in the last five meetings. Four of the last seven meetings between these two have gone the distance. This will be the 12 time Federer and Wawrinka meet on hard court, a surface Wawrinka has never beaten Fed on.
I really like Wawrinka as an underdog, and he’s made us a ton of money in the past. However, Federer has owned Wawrinka for much of his career and is simply playing out of his mind tennis lately. Seriously, this is the best Federer I’ve seen in years. Fed is just on another planet right now and has shown zero weakness.
Federer was my pick to win the US Open before this tournament started and I’m sticking with my pick.
