Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci meet Saturday in the 2015 US Open final.
Flavia Pennetta is coming off a straight sets win over Simona Halep and has played 15 sets this tournament overall. Pennetta is winning at least 60 percent of her first serve points and 33 percent of her second serve points. Pennetta has combined for seven aces, 62 winners and 45 unforced errors in her last three matches. Pennetta has been a rock this tournament, making 16 or less unforced errors in three straight matches and getting no worse than 59 percent of her first serves in play during that stretch. Pennetta is gaining confidence with each set and is probably looking at this as her first and only chance at a grand slam title at the age of 33 years old. This is the first time Pennetta has reached a grand slam final. Pennetta has eight wins over top-10 players since 2014. Two of those wins have come in this year’s US Open.

Roberta Vinci is coming off a three set win over Serena Williams and has played 14 sets this tournament. Vinci is winning at least 63 percent of her first serve points and 36 percent of her second serve points. Vinci has combined for six aces, 70 winners and 71 unforced errors in her last three matches. Vinci is coming off possibly the biggest upset in women’s tennis, so it will be interesting to see how she recovers after no days of rest. Still, Vinci has been real solid with her first serve and has had 26 or less unforced errors in each of her last four matches. Vinci must improve her second serve to have a shot here. This is Vinci’s first time playing in a grand slam final. Vinci has two wins over top-10 players since 2014.
These two have played nine times, and Pennetta has won five of those matches. The most recent match was in the 2013 US Open, a match Pennetta won in straight sets. Pennetta has beaten Vinci in three of their last four meetings, and the last six matches have been decided in straight sets. This will be the third time Vinci and Pennetta meet on hard court.
Well, anybody predict this outcome? Nope.
This is great for these two players, as somebody will accomplish something neither has done before. And while Vinci is coming off the impossible victory, it’s Pennetta who is the overall better player and has looked sharper all tournament. I also have questions of how Vinci will handle this such emotional victory on such a quick turnaround.
I like Pennetta to be the one to win her first grand slam title.
