Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych meet in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Australian Open.

Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over David Goffin and has dropped one set this tournament. Federer is getting at least 62 percent of his first serves in play and is winning at least 75 percent of those points. Federer has racked up 39 or more winners in his last three matches and is winning at least 56 percent of his second serve points in his last three matches. Federer is doing a great job of finishing his points quickly and saving his stamina for the later rounds. Federer has now lost just two matches since the ATP World Tour Finals and looks hungry for his first grand slam title since the 2012 Wimbledon. Federer has never lost in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open but has dropped in the quarterfinals of a grand slam three times since 2012.

Roger Federer vs. Tomas Berdych 2016 Australian Open Quarterfinal Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Tomas Berdych is coming off a five-set win over Roberto Bautista Agut and has lost three sets this tournament. Berdych has got at least 57 percent of his first serves in play in his last three matches and has won at least 73 percent of his first serve points overall. Berdych has racked up 110 winners in his last two matches and has 35 or less unforced errors in three of the four matches. Berdych is very dangerous when his service game is on point and he’s getting double-digit aces, two things he’s doing now which is why he’s won seven of his last eight matches. Berdych has lost in the quarterfinals of a grand slam four times since 2013. Berdych has made the semifinal of the AO the last two years.

These two have played 21 times, and Federer has won 15 of those meetings. Federer has beaten Berdych in the last four meetings and the last three have been decided in straight sets. Berdych’s last victory over Federer came in Dubai in 2013. This will be the 14th time Berdych and Federer meet on hard court.

Berdych has really improved his game over the last couple of years, but Federer continues to turn back the clock and is playing at an elite level. I wrote in my dark horse article that if anybody was going to beat Djokovic, it would be Federer. So, of course I’m siding with Fed in this matchup.
