Victoria Azarenka is coming off a straight sets win over Barbora Strycova and has yet to lose a set this tournament. Azarenka is getting no less than 68 percent of her first serves in play and is winning at least 74 percent of those points. Azarenka has had 14 or less unforced errors in three of her four matches and has combined for 39 winners in her last two matches. While the competition hasn’t been great, Azarenka is clearly healthy and playing some her best tennis in a while, especially with the unforced errors numbers being extremely low this tournament. Azarenka has lost in the quarterfinals of a grand slam four times since 2014. Azarenka hasn’t reached the semifinal of a grand slam since the 2013 US Open.
These two have played six times in the past, and Azarenka has won all six meetings. The most recent match just took place in the Brisbane International Finals, a match Azarenka won in straight sets. In fact, four of Azarenka’s wins over Kerber have been decided in straight sets. This will be the sixth time Kerber and Azarenka meet on hard court.
Kerber is always a tough out and is capable of winning with her power and shotmaking. However, Azarenka looks like she’s back to being a top-three tennis player, and she has the huge mental advantage knowing she’s beaten Kerber every time they’ve played.
