Angelique Kerber and Johanna Konta meet in the semifinals of the 2016 Australian Open.
Angelique Kerber is coming off a straight sets win over Victoria Azarenka and has dropped one set this tournament. Kerber is getting at least 56 percent of her first serves in play and is winning no less than 56 of those points. Kerber has racked up 56 winners in her last two matches and has had no more than 23 unforced errors in her last four matches. Kerber can do a much better job with her first serve, but the limited unforced errors as of late is the reason for her success. Kerber has now won 10 of her last 12 matches since a disappointing showing in last year’s WTA Championships. Kerber has lost in the semifinal of a grand slam three times. Kerber has never reached the final of a grand slam.

Johanna Konta is coming off a straight sets win over Shuai Zhang and has dropped one set this tournament. Konta is getting at least 51 percent of her first serves in play and is winning no less than 68 percent of those points. Konta has produced 65 winners in her last two matches and has 22 or less unforced errors in four of her five matches. Konta has done a great job of handling the pressure of this situation considering she’s never come close to these big matches. Just making it to the semifinal, Konta has made a quarter of her total prize money from her career. Konta has to be confident heading into this match as well. This is Konta’s first semifinal appearance in a grand slam. Konta never made it out of the second round of a grand slam until last year’s US Open.
This will be the first time these two have met on the tennis court.
We backed Konta in the last match, and the Cinderella has to get a lot of respect for this incredible run. However, Kerber is far more experienced and is simply the more talented player. Look for Kerber to use her power to push Konta around and force a few unforced errors.
Kerber will advance to her first career grand slam final.
