Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic square off in the semifinal of the 2016 Australian Open.

Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Tomas Berdych and has dropped one set this tournament. Federer is getting at least 62 percent of his first serves in play and is winning no less than 75 percent of those points. Federer has racked up 87 winners in his last two matches and has 26 or less unforced errors in four of his five matches. Federer is doing a fine job of finishing his points quickly and hasn’t quite been tested up to this point despite solid competition. Fed is giving himself a great chance to win his first grand slam since the 2012 Wimbledon. Federer has lost in the semifinal in four of his last five Australian Opens. Federer hopes to make the final in each of his last three grand slams.

Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer 2016 Australian Open Semifinal Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Kei Nishikori and has dropped two sets this tournament. Djokovic is getting at least 57 percent of his first serves in play and is winning no less than 65 percent of those points. Djokovic has produced 84 winners in his last two matches and has 37 or less unforced errors in four of his five matches. Djokovic should be well rested for this match after a banged up Nishikori didn’t provide much of a challenge. However, Djokovic does have 127 combined unforced errors in his last two matches. Djokovic has lost in the semifinal of a grand slam three times since 2012. Djokovic has never lost in the semifinals of the Australian Open, an event he’s won five times.

These two have played 44 times, and the meetings are split down the middle. Djokovic and Federer each beat each other at last year’s ATP World Tour Finals. However, Djokovic has beaten Federer in five of the last seven meetings. Djokovic has also beaten Federer in eight of the 13 meetings against Federer in grand slams.

I’m one of those people who thinks Federer has another grand slam title in him, especially with the way he’s playing right now. So, I’m going to keep picking Federer over Djokovic simply because the value is too great. If anybody can beat Novak, it’s going to be Fed.

So, here’s to Federer inching that much closer to another grand slam crown.
