Kei Nishikori and Novak Djokovic meet Saturday in the semifinals of the 2016 Mutua Madrid Open.

Kei Nishikori is coming off a three set victory over Nick Kyrgios and has dropped two sets this tournament. Nishikori has been on fire in 2016 with wins in 12 of his last 14 matches, and he’s already played in three tournament finals. Nishikori continues to hit winners at a high percentage and has been able to dig deep and bounce back after dropping the first set. Win or lose here, Nishikori is picking up much needed momentum heading into the French Open, which has been a major he’s had very little success at throughout his career. This is Nishikori’s third straight Madrid Open semifinal appearance, and he looks for his second final.

USA TODAY Sports

Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Milos Raonic and has not dropped a set all tournament. Djokovic simply continues to dominate, as he’s lost just one match since the Indian Wells Masters and looks to reach already his fifth final appearance of the season. There’s really not much more you can say about Djokovic, as he’s clearly head and shoulders the best player in the world and leaves very little of a window for his opponent. Once Djokovic gets in a rhythm and starts to takeover a match, it’s pretty much over. Djokovic looks to make his second Madrid Open Final and first since 2011. Djokovic has not lost in a semifinal of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 since the 2014 Shanghai Masters.

These two have played nine times in the past, and Djokovic has won seven of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year’s Miami Masters, and the last three matches have ended in straight sets. Nishikori’s only wins over came in the 2014 US Open and 2011 Basel Open.

I’ve made it clear in the past that I’m a fan of Nishikori and think he’s capable of winning big matches like this one. However, you can’t bet against Djokovic with the way he’s been playing the past couple of seasons. Djokovic is clearly the best player in the world and doesn’t lose big matches often these days.

Look for Djokovic to reach yet another final.
