Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem meet in the round of 16 of the 2016 Rome Masters.
Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Alexander Zverev that took 21 games to decide. Federer continues to turn back the clock, as he’s won 11 of his last 14 matches and is well rested with this being just his second tournament since the Australian Open. Federer continues to hit his spots with ease and holds serve at a high percentage. Federer can only hope he can make a decent run in this tournament in order to build some recent momentum heading into the French Open where he looks for his first grand slam title since the 2012 Wimbledon. Federer hopes to reach the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters in four of his last five appearances.

Dominic Thiem is coming off a straight sets win over Joao Sousa and has dropped one set this tournament. Thiem has won seven of his last 10 matches and is still trying to find overall consistency at just 22 years old. This has already been a strong season for Thiem, who has played in three finals and is fresh off being the runner-up at the BMW Open. Thiem continues to hang around that top-15 ranking, and it would be a huge accomplishment if he’s able to pick up his fourth career victory over a top-10 player. Thiem has never reached the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters. Thiem’s only quarterfinal appearance of the Masters series was in the 2015 Miami Masters.
These two have played just once in the past, which was in this year’s Brisbane Open, a match Federer won in straight sets. The match took 17 games to decide. This will obviously be their first match on clay court.
You can’t overlook Thiem and the potential of him pulling off this upset, but Federer continues to play at a high level and makes younger players pay for their mistakes. You have to like Federer to get the job done here.
