March 2016

the Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

David Goffin and Andy Murray square off in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Rome Masters.

David Goffin is coming off a straight sets win over Tomas Berdych that took 12 games to decide. Goffin’s victory in which he did give away a single game may have been the most impressive win of the tournament. Goffin has now won his last two matches in straight sets and has won six of his last nine matches overall. Goffin is clearly experiencing a breakout season and looks for his third semifinal appearance since the Indian Wells Masters. Goffin now has three career wins over top-10 players and could find himself in the top-10 if he stays on this path. Goffin hopes to reach the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 for the third time this season.

David Goffin vs. Andy Murray 2016 Rome Masters Quarterfinals Pick, Odds, Prediction

Andy Murray is coming off a straight sets win over Jeremy Chardy that took 16 games to decide. Murray has yet to drop a set this tournament and his last five wins have been decided in straight sets. Murray is finding his consistent form at the right time and could make the semifinals for a third straight tournament with a victory here. Murray is dominating his service game and continues to put pressure on his opponent defensively. When Murray is hitting the ball the way he is currently, he’s very tough to beat. Murray looks for his second semifinal appearance in the Rome Masters and first since 2011.

These two have played three times in the past, and Murray has won all three meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Belgium v Great Britain, a match that was decided in three sets. This will be the second time these two play on clay court.

Goffin made me look foolish in his last match and is simply on a tear as of late. However, Murray is playing some of his best tennis currently and has owned Goffin in a limited sample size. You have to think Murray is still motivated to win his first title since last season.

I’ll take Murray in what should be a tight match given their current form.
