Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic meet Sunday afternoon in the final of the 2016 Rome Masters.

Andy Murray is coming off a straight sets victory over Lucas Pouille that took 15 games to decide. Murray has not dropped a set this tournament, and his last seven wins have come in straight sets. Murray has lost just nine games in his last two matches and it may be safe to say he’s currently playing his best tennis of the season. Murray will be a tough out in the French if he keeps playing at this level. This is Murray’s first career final appearance in the Rome Masters. This is Murray’s third final appearance this season, and he’s looking for his first title since the 2015 Canadian Open. Murray is 2-1 in career finals that take place on clay, and his last five final appearances overall have been against Djokovic.

Andy Murray vs. Novak Djokovic 2016 Rome Masters Final Pick, Odds, Prediction

Novak Djokovic is coming off a three set victory over Kei Nishikori that needed a third set tiebreak. Djokovic has now won nine straight matches and has played eight sets in his last three matches. While Djokovic continues to find ways to win and is playing at an elite level, he is dealing with a left ankle/foot injury that helped Nishikori win the first set 6-2. It will be interesting to see Djokovic feels heading into this match. This is Djokovic’s seventh finals appearance in the Rome Masters, and he looks for his fifth title. This is Djokovic’s sixth finals appearance this season and he hasn’t lost a final since the 2015 Cincinnati Masters. Djokovic is 12-8 in career finals that take place on clay.

These two have played 32 times, and Djokovic has won 23 of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year's Madrid Masters, a match that was decided in three sets. Djokovic has beaten Murray four straight times, and his last loss to Andy came in the 2015 Canadian Masters. Djokovic is 4-0 against Murray on clay court.

Murray is playing fabulous tennis and should have an advantage here after Djokovic played another grueling match that lasted what felt like forever. There’s also the injury issue with Djokovic, which may be worse after such a long match.

However, if Djokovic is going to be on the court, I’m going to bet he wins. Djokovic is just a machine right now that doesn’t find a way to slowdown.
