the Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

David Ferrer and Marin Cilic square off in the semifinals of the 2016 Geneva Open.

David Ferrer is coming off a straight sets win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez that took 16 games to decide. Ferrer has played just four sets this tournament and is building confidence heading into the French Open with wins in seven of his last 10 singles matches. Ferrer is most comfortable on clay court, and it’s the surface he’s won 12 of his 51 career titles. Ferrer looks sharp hitting the ball and should be well rested for this big match due to a lack of work getting to this point. Ferrer looks to reach his first finals appearance since the 2015 Vienna Open. Ferrer has lost six of his last eight semifinals appearances.

David Ferrer vs. Marin Cilic 2016 Geneva Open Semifinals Pick, Odds, Prediction

Marin Cilic is coming off a straight sets win over Federico Delbonis that took 19 games to decide. Cilic is trying to build momentum heading into the French Open, and he’s won seven of his last nine matches. Cilic has also taken a lot of time off, as this is his first tournament since Miami, so he should be ready to go and hungry for some tournament success. Cilic isn’t most comfortable on clay and it’s not that effective with his power game, but he has won 11 of his last 18 matches on this surface. Cilic hopes to make his second final appearance this season and first since the Open 13 back in February. Cilic has split his last eight semifinals appearances.

These two have played six times, and Ferrer has won four of those meetings including four of the last five. The most recent match was in the 2015 French Open, a match Ferrer won in straight sets. Cilic’s only wins over Ferrer were in the 2011 Rome Masters and 2009 Australian Open. This will be the fourth time they meet on clay court.

This should be a fun matchup between two top-15 players in the world. But if forced to pick, I have to go with Ferrer. He’s more comfortable on this surface and owns the head to head, which includes dominating the most recent and probably only relevant match between the two.

Ferrer has the advantage here.
