TV:

John Isner and John Millman square off early in the first round of the 2016 French Open.

John Isner enters this tournament in poor form, as he’s lost four of his last six matches and is coming off a loss to Lukas Rosol in the Geneva Open. Isner hasn’t looked like himself this season and has had issues with his service game which is most troubling. The good news for Isner is that he’s well rested for this tournament after playing just four matches since the Miami Masters. Isner isn’t a big fan of clay due him relying heavily on power, and he’s lost six of his last nine matches on the surface. Isner has not lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2014 Australian Open. Isner has lost in the first round of the French Open twice in his career.

John Isner vs. John Millman 2016 French Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

John Millman enters a grand slam for just the sixth time and hopes to pull off an impressive upset with the opportunity. Millman has won seven of his last 11 matches, which includes a victory over Pablo Carreno Busta in the Miami Masters. Millman hasn’t had a lot of success on the ATP level overall but has shown flashes as of late and also took Steve Johnson to three long sets back in Delray Beach. Millman has had his moments this season and his current ranking of 60th in the world is as high as it’s ever been. One concern is that Millman has been dealing with an ankle injury, forcing him to retire from the Seoul Challenger quarters. This will be Millman’s first time playing in the French Open. Millman has advanced past the first round of a grand slam just twice in his career.

These two have met once in the past, which was in the 2015 China Open, a match Isner won in three sets. The match took 33 games to decide. This will obviously be the first time these two meet on clay court.

I’m scared of death when it comes to backing Isner in his current form, especially on clay court where his ball is slowed down a bit. Millman has the potential to pull off the upset, especially after their previous match went the distance.

However, I’m going to give Isner the benefit of the doubt and predict him to make it out of the first round. He has more experience and is overall the better player.
