TV:

Andy Murray and Ivo Karlovic meet in the third round of the 2016 French Open.

Andy Murray is coming off a five set win over Mathias Bourgue that took 43 games to decide. In the victory, Murray 68 percent of his first serve points and 47 percent of his second serve points. Murray has now played 10 sets of tennis, so fatigue and conditioning can’t be on his side this early in the tournament. Murray is averaging 40 unforced errors a match and is getting off to these slow starts. The good news for Murray is that he continues to find ways to get the job done and does win a very high percentage of his first serve points when he gets them in play. Murray hasn’t been eliminated before the fourth round of a grand slam since the 2010 US Open.

Andy Murray vs. Ivo Karlovic 2016 French Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Ivo Karlovic is coming off a five set win over Jordan Thompson that took 70 games to decide. In the victory, Karlovic won 83 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Karlovic had to play four tiebreaks in his last match, which included a fifth set that lasted 22 games. Karlovic continues to rely on his service game, as he now has a ridiculous 72 aces in two matches and has won no less than 83 percent of his first serve points. Karlovic hasn’t been as successful with his return game, but he’s going to frustrate opponents if he continues to serve at this level. Karlovic has reached the fourth round of a grand slam three times since 2010.

These two have met six times in the past, and Murray has won every match. The most recent match was in the 2015 Wimbledon, a match Murray won in four sets. Karlovic has been able to win four sets in his career against Murray. This will be their first match on clay court.

Murray caught a break here due to Karlovic not exactly being the freshest player either due to a lengthy, lengthy match. I value fatigue in grand slams due to the wear and tear these long matches put on players’ bodies. Neither has the advantage in that department. However, Murray has owned Karlovic in their head to head, and he simply doesn’t lose before the fourth round of grand slams.

Give me Murray to advance yet again.
