TV:

Ernests Gulbis and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga square off in the third round of the 2016 French Open.

Ernests Gulbis is coming off a straight sets win over Joao Sousa that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Gulbis won 85 percent of his first serve points and 70 percent of his second serve points. Gulbis has cruised in straight sets in both of his matches and has racked up 98 winners in the process. Gulbis does have 60 unforced errors, but he’s able to get away with that by winning at least 80 percent of his first serve points. Gulbis is moving well, hitting his spots and finishing his points quickly. Gulbis has reached the fourth round of a grand slam once since 2009, which was the 2014 French Open.

Ernests Gulbis vs. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 2016 French Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is coming off a five set win over Marcos Baghdatis that took 47 games to decide. In the victory, Tsonga won 74 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Tsonga is coming off a rough match in which he had 51 unforced errors, but he was able to dig deep and win the final three sets rather quickly. Tsonga continues to win a high percentage of his service games and has racked up 60 winners in two matches. It also helps that Tsonga is the crowd favorite and is given an extra boost when needed most. Tsonga has reached the fourth round of a grand slam in seven of his last eight appearances.

These two have met five times in the past and Tsonga leads the series, 3-2. The last match was in the 2014 Marseille Open, a match Gulbis won in straight sets. Gulbis has won the last two matches, and Tsonga’s last win came in the 2009 Tokyo Outdoor. This will be the first time these two meet on clay.

It’s hard not to side with Tsonga in this match considering he’s pretty solid in this tournament and Gulbis hasn’t beaten a top-10 player in three years. Tsonga should also be more focused here after getting a scare in the second round.

I like Tsonga to advance to the fourth round.
