Baghdatis vs. Berdych

TV:

Tomas Berdych and Marcos Baghdatis meet in the round of 32 in the 2016 Gerry Weber Open.

Tomas Berdych is coming off a quarterfinals appearance in the French Open and will be double dipping in this tournament with his partner Marcel Granollers. Berdych has certainly had his moments this season and has won 10 of his last 15 matches. However, Berdych has had his fair share of inconsistencies as well like getting bounced early in the Monte Carlo Masters and Rome Masters. We know what Berdych is capable of when he’s serving well, but he has to be better with his unforced errors and his shotmaking overall. This is a chance for Berdych to kind of get going before the Wimbledon takes place. Berdych has won 13 of his last 18 matches on grass.

Tomas Berdych vs. Marcos Baghdatis 2016 Gerry Weber Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Marcos Baghdatis is coming off a first round loss in the Mercedes Cup to Jan-Lennard Struff. Baghdatis has now lost five of his last six matches, as his only win during that stretch was in the French Open against Gilles Muller. Baghdatis is clearly in struggle mode at the moment as he hasn’t looked sharp since making the final back in February at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Baghdatis hasn’t been completely awful during this losing streak, as he’s pushed some decent players to the limit, but he’s not making the shots needed in order to get over the hump. Baghdatis is desperate need of a feel good win here. Baghdatis has won 10 of his last 17 matches on grass.

These two have met six times in the past, and Berdych has won four of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Stockholm Open. The only times Baghdatis beat Berdych came in the 2010 Cincinnati Masters and 2006 Indian Wells Masters.

It’s hard to back Baghdatis in his current form, especially against a consistent player such as Berdych. You know what you’re getting with the top-10 player, and it’s tough seeing a slumping Baghdatis get the victory here.

I like Berdych in straight sets.
