Mayer vs. Nishikori

The Line Mayer +425 / Nishikori -550 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

Kei Nishikori and Florian Mayer square off in the round of 16 in the 2016 Gerry Weber Open.

Kei Nishikori is coming off a three set victory over Lucas Pouille that took 30 games to decide. Nishikori bounced back after dropping a first set tiebreak and lost just five games in the final two sets. It’s been a very productive and consistent 2016 for Nishikori, who hasn’t had a poor showing since February when he was upset in the Mexican Open. Nishikori hasn’t always played the cleanest tennis this season, but he continues to dig deep and finds ways to win by producing quality shotmaking. When hitting his winners and forcing the issue offensively, it’s tough to beat Nishikori. Nishikori has won 10 of his last 14 matches on grass.

Kei Nishikori vs. Florian Mayer 2016 Gerry Weber Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

Florian Mayer is coming off a straight sets win over Brian Baker that took 25 games to decide. Mayer has found a little bit of a rhythm lately with wins in five of his last six matches and the only loss during that stretch coming to Roger Federer. It’s been a rough few years for Mayer, who has just been trying to stay above the top-200 due to injuries and inconsistent play overall. However, Mayer is still a former top-20 player who can compete at the highest level when feeling food, and we saw that in the Federer match when he forced two tiebreaks. It will be interesting to see if Mayer can build on his current hot streak. Mayer has won seven of his last 10 matches on grass.

These two have played twice in the past, and Nishikori won both matches. The two meetings took place in the 2011 Australian Open and 2008 Delray Beach Open. Mayer has won one set against Nishikori.

Mayer is a dangerous player, especially in his current form as long as he’s not racking up the unforced errors. However, Nishikori has been one of the more consistent players all season long and seems to be pushing for a top-five spot at some point this season. It’s going to be tough to overcome the shotmaking of Nishikori.
