Ward vs. Goffin
The Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
David Goffin and Alexander Ward square off early in the first round of the 2016 Wimbledon.
David Goffin hopes to build on his first grand slam quarterfinal appearance after shining in the French Open. Goffin also made the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open and has won 10 of his last 15 matches overall, so he should be feeling confident heading into this tournament. Goffin is on the brink of being a top-10 player for the first time in his career and has gotten better recently in grand slam play. If Goffin limits his unforced errors, he should be poised to make an impressive run in the 2016 Wimbledon. Goffin hasn’t been eliminated in the first round of a grand slam since the 2014 Wimbledon. Goffin has won eight of his last 12 matches on grass.

Alexander Ward will play in his first grand slam of his career and will be double dipping with his partner Brydan Klein. Ward has lost five of his last seven matches and has a real pedestrian career overall. Ward is currently ranked inside the top-250 for the first time of his career and should be able to take this experience and build on it moving forward. In order to have any shot of pulling off the upset, Ward has to get off to a fast start and kind of get the crowd behind him early. This will be Ward’s first grand slam appearance. Ward has lost his last four matches on grass.
These two played once, which was in the 2012 Le Gosier Challenger, a match Goffin won in three sets. This will be their first match on grass.
Goffin has really improved in grand slam play the last couple of years, and the moment is probably going to be too big for the inexperienced Ward. This could get ugly quickly if Goffin gets off to an impressive start.
Give me Goffin in straight sets.
