Mayer vs. Thiem

June 2016

The Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

Dominic Thiem and Florian Mayer square off early in the first round of the 2016 Wimbledon.

Dominic Thiem continues to have his breakout season at 22 years old and has now won 16 of his last 18 matches. Thiem has already made five final appearances this season and is coming off a title at the Stuttgart Open. Thiem has been dominating his service game, is strong with his returns, and you see a player who is growing up quickly as one of the top players in the world. In his current form, it likely won’t be long before Thiem becomes a top-five player and is consistently pushing for grand slam titles. Making a deep run in his third Wimbledon appearance would be another good sign for the uprising Thiem. Thiem has lost in the first round of a grand slam just twice in his career. Thiem has won seven of his last eight matches on grass.

Dominic Thiem vs. Florian Mayer 2016 Wimbledon Pick, Odds, Prediction

Florian Mayer enters this tournament in great form, as he just won the Gerry Weber Open and has won 12 of his last 17 matches overall. Mayer has really fallen off the map a bit as he approaches 33 years old and has had issues with his service game. However, beating four straight top-50 players has to be terrific for Mayer’s confidence and kind of shows he still has a little something left in the tank. It’s important for Mayer to get off to a fast start to keep that confidence flowing. Mayer has two wins over top-10 players since 2014. Mayer has not made it out of the first round of a grand slam since the 2014 Australian Open. Mayer has won 10 of his last 13 matches on grass.

These two have played once in the past, which was in this year's Gerry Weber Open, a match Mayer won in 19 games.

This has the potential for an upset given the way Mayer is playing. However, it’s one thing to win in Halle, it’s another to win matches in a grand slam. The bottom line is that you can count on one hand how many players in better form than Thiem. It’s tough to pick against him.

Give me Thiem in four sets.
