Cervantes vs. Tsonga
The Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Inigo Cervantes square off early in the first round of the 2016 Wimbledon.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga should be well rested for this tournament considering he hasn’t played since getting bounced in the third round of the French Open. Tsonga has had a hit or miss 2016 season, as he’s won seven of his last 12 matches and has quite a few questionable losses recently. However, Tsonga is always capable of being a darkhorse in a grand slam due to his shotmaking, strong service game and how much ground he covers defensively. Tsonga hasn’t had a strong finish at Wimbledon since 2012, so he should be motivated. Tsonga hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2007 Australian Open. Tsonga has won six of his last nine matches on grass.
USA TODAY Sports
Inigo Cervantes is participating in his second Wimbledon appearance and will double dip with his partner Paolo Lorenzi. Cervantes has split his last 10 matches when you include qualifying and this will be just his fourth grand slam appearance of his career. Cervantes should be feeling somewhat good about himself after making the semifinals of the Prostejov Challenger and stealing a set against the red hot Dominic Thiem in the French Open. Cervantes doesn’t have a ton of singles success under his belt at 26 years old, but he has shown recently that he can compete with decent competition. Cervantes has made in past the first round of a grand slam just once, which was the 2012 Wimbledon. Cervantes is 2-3 on grass in his career.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Tsonga still has a lot of good tennis left in his 31-year-old body, and you have to think he’s eager to make a deep Wimbledon run for the first time in a while. That could start with a strong start in this match. If Tsonga brings his A game, Cervantes will have trouble keeping up.
I’ll take Tsonga in straight sets.
