Pella vs. Federer

June 2016

the Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

TV: ESPN

Roger Federer and Guido Pella square off early in the first round of the 2016 Wimbledon.

Roger Federer continues to try and shake off injuries and rust, and he’s coming off a semifinals appearance at the Gerry Weber Open. Federer has won just six of his last 10 matches and has been dealing with knee and back issues. When healthy, Federer is still a threat to win a grand slam despite turning 35 years old in August. However, we’ll see just how effective and how serious of a run Federer can make sooner than later depending on his current form and health. If Federer is struggling with his movement and his service game, it could be a rough and quick tournament for one of the best to ever do it. Federer has not been eliminated in the first round of a grand slam since the 2003 French Open. Federer has won 12 of his last 15 matches on grass.

Roger Federer vs. Guido Pella 2016 Wimbledon Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Guido Pella has lost six of his last nine matches and will be double dipping in this tournament with his partner Horacio Zeballos. Pella has played just one match since the French Open and has lost 10 of his last 18 matches overall. Pella is clearly in poor form at the moment but is still a top-50 player in the world and is always a threat to snap out of things at anytime. In order to pull off the upset, Pella has to be more consistent with his service game and can’t get into long rallies. Pella has to put pressure on Federer early or this could get ugly. Pella has made it past the first round of a grand slam three times, including twice this season. Pella is 2-5 on grass in his career.

This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.

The health and rust with Federer is a serious issue and could force an early exit if either factor are still in play. Heck, this match could get interesting if his back flares up or his knee is still giving him problems.

Overall, however, Federer is by far the better player here and should be able to tough his way out to victory.
