Fritz vs. Wawrinka

June 2016

The Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

Stan Wawrinka and Taylor Fritz square off early in the first round of the 2016 Wimbledon.

Stan Wawrinka has been hit or miss this season and right when it looks like he’s going to turn things around, he has another hiccup. Wawrinka won the Geneva Open and made the semifinals of the French Open, and then he just lost to Fernando Verdasco in the AEGON Championships. Wawrinka is one of the tougher players in the world to beat when he’s hitting his spots, but he’s capable of a real stinker when his winners turn into a truckload of unforced errors. It’s really just a matter of which Wawrinka decides to show up for this tournament and you should find out quickly. Wawrinka hasn’t been eliminated in the first round of a grand slam since the 2014 French Open. Wawrinka has won 10 of his last 15 matches on grass.

Stan Wawrinka vs. Taylor Fritz 2016 Wimbledon Pick, Odds, Prediction

Taylor Fritz enters this tournament losing five of his last six matches and eight of his last 10 overall. Despite recent struggles, Fritz is a promising American who is currently a top-70 player at just 18 years old. Fritz made the final of the Memphis Open back in February and pushed Kei Nishikori to two competitive sets. Fritz has shown he’s a guy to keep an eye on moving forward as the United States continues to search for a male tennis player who can seriously make a run towards the top of the rankings. A win here would definitely speed of the expectations of the young Fritz. Fritz has never made it out of the first round of a grand slam in just two appearances. Fritz is 1-3 in his career on grass court.

This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.

Fritz is a young player to watch very closely, as he’s starting to get his feet wet against better competition and is holding his own. He could certainly steal a set in this match if Wawrinka racks up the unforced errors. However, a victory may be asking for a bit much at this point, especially when you need three sets.

I’ll take Wawrinka in four sets.
