Benneteau vs. Nishikori

June 2016

The Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

TV: ESPN

Kei Nishikori and Julien Benneteau square off early in the second round of the 2016 Wimbledon.

Kei Nishikori is coming off a straight sets win over Sam Groth that took just over two hours. In the victory, Nishikori won 43 of his 69 first serve points and racked up 31 winners to 23 unforced errors. Nishikori has been battling injuries as of late, but he was moving well and played a clean match for three sets. When Nishikori is hitting his spots and not beating himself with unforced errors, he’s a threat against anybody in this tournament. Nishikori hopes to make the third round of a grand slam in seven of his last nine appearances. Nishikori has won 10 of his last 15 matches on grass.

Kei Nishikori vs. Julien Benneteau 2016 Wimbledon Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Julien Benneteau is coming off a straight sets win over Illya Marchenko that took two hours and 15 minutes to finish. In the victory, Benneteau won 66 of 95 first serve points and racked up 33 winners to 14 unforced errors. Benneteau was very aggressive at the net with 25 points won, and he was nearly flawless in terms of unforced errors. Benneteau doesn’t have a lot of grand slam success throughout his lengthy career, but he’ll be a sneaky second round opponent if he can limit his mistakes like he did in his opening round victory. Benneteau hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2013 US Open. Benneteau has lost five of his last eight matches on grass.

These two have played four times in the past and Nishikori leads the series, 3-1. The most recent match was in the 2014 Malaysian Open, a match Nishikori won in straight sets. Benneteau’s only win over Nishikori came in the 2007 Washington Open.

Benneteau doesn’t have the athleticism or youth to hang with the young and healthy Nishikori. When he’s moving well and hitting winners, there’s not too many players who can beat him to three sts. Benneteau is not one of those guys.

Give me Nishikori in three or four sets.
