Gael Monfils and Vasek Pospisil meet in the first round of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Gael Monfils is coming off a semifinals appearance in the Canadian Masters and has been as consistent as he’s ever been. Monfils has made three finals appearances this season and is fresh off a title at the Washington Open. Monfils has been super focused on winning points rather than pleasing the crowd, and he no longer has as many mental lapses that resulted in wasted sets. Monfils is on the cusp of becoming a top-10 player once again and is as dangerous of any opponent in this field given his current form. Monfils made the quarterfinals in the 2008 olympics. Monfils has won 12 of his last 14 matches on hard court.
USA TODAY Sports
Vasek Pospisil enters this tournament in brutal form as he's lost 10 of his last 14 singles matches. Pospisil didn’t win a single game in his last set and has lost nine of his last 12 sets overall. Needless to say, Pospisil has fallen off a cliff in the rankings, as he was just a top-30 player a couple of years ago and looked to be a rising star for Canada. Pospisil has racking up a ton of unforced errors and has been struggling with his service game quite a bit. The good thing for Pospisil is that he does have olympic experience in singles and doubles, which should help calm the nerves down a bit. Pospisil has lost five of his last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played three times in the past and Monfils has won all three meetings in straight sets. The most recent match was in this year's Canadian Masters. All four matches will be on hard court.
If Monfils was able to beat Pospisil years ago when he was immature and inconsistent, this new and improved version should have little trouble. After all, they just played last week. Monfils will again make light work of the Canadian.
Give me Monfils in straight sets.
