Rafael Nadal and Federico Delbonis meet in the first round of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

Rafael Nadal is entering the olympics as a question mark considering he hasn’t played a match since withdrawing in the third round of the French Open. Nadal has been dealing with consistency issues and injuries, although he did win the Monte-Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open back in April. Considering Nadal is healthy and ready to go and not just throwing his name in the hat for the sake of it, he’s a serious threat to make some noise in this tournament. Remember, Nadal did win gold back in the 2008 olympics after beating Fernando González in three painless sets. Nadal has split his last eight matches on hard court.

USA TODAY Sports

Federico Delbonis enters this tournament in poor form after losing his last four matches, including a first round exit against Dennis Novikov in the Canadian Masters. Delbonis has been consistently a top-40 player this season and did win the Grand Prix Hassan II back in April. However, Delbonis hasn’t been the same since winning that title and can’t be too confident considering he hasn’t won a match since the second round of the Geneva Open. Still, Delbonis has beaten top tier competition over the years and is capable of a surprise if he hits his spots. Delbonis has three career wins over top-10 players, including Andy Murray this season. Delbonis has lost three of his last four matches on hard court.

These two have met twice in the past and Nadal won both meetings in straight sets. The two matches took place in the 2015 Argentina Open and 2013 Chile Open.

Not sure what we’re getting out of Nadal given such a long layoff, but he should have enough to take care of the slumping Delbonis. After all, Delbonis has won just seven games in four career sets against Nadal.

Nadal should be able to win this match in straight sets.
