Konta vs. Kerber

August 2016

The Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

Angelique Kerber and Johanna Konta meet in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

Angelique Kerber is coming off a straight sets win over Samantha Stosur that took 18 games to decide. Kerber absolutely dominated her third round match, which included winning the first six games. Kerber has made very little to no unforced errors up to this point and is playing incredible defense. Kerber is very tough to beat when she’s controlling the pace of the match and not hurting herself by forcing winners that simply aren’t there. This is Kerber’s second appearance in the olympic quarterfinals, as she made it back in 2012 before losing to Victoria Azarenka in straight sets. Kerber has to like her chances this time to bring home Germany a medal. Kerber has won 10 of her last 12 matches on hard court.

Angelique Kerber vs. Johanna Konta 2016 Rio Summer Olympics Quarterfinal Pick, Odds, Prediction

Johanna Konta is coming off a three set win over Svetlana Kuznetsova that took 32 games to decide. Konta continues what has been a very impressive 2016 season, as she won her first singles title this year and cracked the top-20 for the first time. Now, Konta hs the UK on her back and is just a couple wins away from bringing home an olympic medal. Konta has dropped just one set this tournament and is doing a wonderful job with her service game. If Konta is going to advance to the semis, she has to be effective with her second serve. Konta has won 10 of her last 11 matches on hard court.

These two have met once in the past, which was in this year's Australian Open, a match Kerber won in straight sets. The match took 20 games to decide.

Kerber is playing too well defensively and making too little mistakes to get tripped up by Konta. She’s a solid player and is having a terrific season, but Kerber is on another level right now and had little trouble with Konta a few months ago.

This match could go three sets, but Kerber will win when it’s said and done.
