TV:

Monica Puig and Angelique Kerber meet in the gold medal match of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

Monica Puig is coming off a three set victory over Petra Kvitova that took 26 games to decide. Puig showed terrific fight to win the first set and made all of the clutch shots in the third to advance to the olympic final. Puig has played some out-of-this-world tennis in this tournament and has lost a combined 17 games in her last three matches. This is easily the biggest accomplishment yet for the 22-year-old Puig, and a gold medal should do wonders for her confidence. Puig is guaranteed to become the first Puerto Rican to win an olympic medal in tennis. Puig has won eight of her last nine matches on hard court.

Monica Puig vs. Angelique Kerber 2016 Olympics Gold Medal Match Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Angelique Kerber is coming off a straight sets win over Madison Keys that took 21 games to decide. Kerber has yet to drop a set this tournament and has lost just 16 games in her last three matches overall. Kerber has also won 13 of her last 15 sets. Kerber has simply dominated pretty much all of her matches and has been able to do so by making very little unforced errors and playing incredible defense. As long as Kerber continues to play at this level, she’ll become the only German besides Steffi Graf to win an olympic gold medal. Kerber has won 12 of her last 14 matches on hard court.

These two have played twice and Kerber has won both meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Canadian Masters while the other took place in the 2013 Brisbane Open.

We’ve backed Puig this whole tournament and I’m not surprised by this success, as she’s a promising young player who is gaining confidence by the second. However, Kerber has been far more consistent recently and has more experience in these type of matches.

While I’d love to see Puig win and pull off the upset, Kerber is the smart play.
