September 2016

TV: ESPN

Lucas Pouille and Rafael Nadal meet in the fourth round of the 2016 US Open.

Lucas Pouille is coming off a five set win over Roberto Bautista Agut that took 48 games to decide. In the victory, Pouille won 69 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Pouille has to be happy after winning the final two sets and managing to beat a top-20 player despite racking up 61 unforced errors in the process. However, there may be little left in the tank for the 22-year-old Pouille after playing 10 sets his last two matches and 14 sets this tournament overall. Pouille has three career victories over top-10 players, all of which have come this season. Pouille hopes to make his second career grand slam quarterfinal. Pouille has won seven of his last 10 matches on hard court.

Lucas Pouille vs. Rafael Nadal 2016 US Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Andrey Kuznetsov that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 72 percent of his first serve points and 48 percent of his second serve points. Nadal also won 52 percent of his receiving points, a percentage that’s going to get him further in this tournament if he can continue to produce. Nadal has yet to drop a set this tournament and is making very little unforced errors. Nadal hopes to make his fifth grand slam quarterfinal since 2015. A win here would give Nadal his seventh career US Open quarterfinal appearance. Nadal has won eight of his last 11 matches on hard court.

These two have played once in the past, which was in the 2015 Monte Carlo Masters, a match Nadal won in straight sets. The match took 15 games to decide.

Nadal hasn’t had to work very hard to get to this point and is showing little to no signs of his wrist injury flaring up. He looks sharp and confident. That’s bad news for the inexperienced Pouille who has had little previous grand slam success and was waxed last year by an inconsistent Nadal.

I like the Spaniard to make the quarters.
