Nishikori vs. Wawrinka

September 2016

The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

TV: ESPN

Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori meet in the semifinals of the 2016 US Open.

Stan Wawrinka is coming off a four set win over Juan Martin Del Potro that took 40 games to decide. In the victory, Wawrinka won 76 percent of his first serve points and 65 percent of his second serve points. Wawrinka continues to rack up a high number of winners and will be even tougher to beat if his serve continues to hold up like it did in the quarterfinals. Wawrinka has been in control for majority of his matches and has yet to have that brainfart match where he kind of spirals out of control with foolish decisions. Wawrinka hopes to make his third career grand slam final and first in the US Open. Wawrinka has won nine of his last 11 matches on hard court.

Stan Wawrinka vs. Kei Nishikori 2016 US Open Semifinal Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Kei Nishikori is coming off a five set win over Andy Murray that took 46 games to decide. In the victory, Nishikori won 72 percent of his first serve points and 43 percent of his second serve points. Nishikori has played a lot of tennis in this tournament and is fresh off a marathon match that was three minutes shy of four hours. Nishikori is always one of the more fit players on tour, but it’ll be interesting to see just how much he has left in the tank for this one. If Nishikori can keep getting his first serve in play, he’ll have a great chance to make the final in this tournament. Nishikori hopes to make his second career grand slam final and second in the US Open. Nishikori has won 11 of his last 13 matches on hard court.

These two have played five times in the past and Wawrinka has won three of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year's Canadian Masters, a match Nishikori won in straight sets. These two have split their four meetings on hard court.

Nishikori has been the more inconsistent player in this tournament, as he’s dropped five sets overall. He’s also coming off a long match that took a toll physically and mentally. He’ll be in trouble if this match goes longer than three sets, as Wawrinka’s power shots and the way he works the court will have him running for days.

Wawrinka has been the more reliable player this tournament and is fresher at the moment. I like Wawrinka to make the US Open final.
