Kerber vs. Pliskova

September 2016

TV: ESPN

Karolina Pliskova and Angelique Kerber meet Saturday afternoon in the 2016 US Open Final.

Karolina Pliskova is coming off a straight sets win over Serena Williams that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 84 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova dominated in her upset victory from start to finish and continues to lose very little points on her first serve. Pliskova has to be better on her second serve if she hopes to complete the task, but she’s currently a very confident player who hasn’t lost a singles match since the Canadian Masters. Pliskova has a chance at her first grand slam title and seventh singles title overall. Pliskova has won 11 straight matches on hard court.

Karolina Pliskova vs. Angelique Kerber 2016 US Open Final Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Angelique Kerber is coming off a straight sets win over Caroline Wozniacki that took games to decide. In the victory, Kerber won 68 percent of her first serve points and 55 percent of her second serve points. Kerber is now already the top ranked player in the world with Serena Williams losing, but she’s now playing for a $3.5 million prize and another grand slam title. Kerber continues to be the most consistent women’s player all season long and is now in her seventh final this season when you include the olympics. Kerber will be in great shape if she can keep her unforced errors total under 20 for this match. Kerber hopes to win her second career grand slam title and 10th title overall. Kerber has won 10 of her last 11 matches on hard court.

These two have met seven times in the past and Kerber has won four of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year's Cincinnati Masters, a match Pliskova won in straight sets. Five of the seven meetings between these two have been decided in straight sets.

It’s time to stop doubting Pliskova, as her serve has been money all tournament and her confidence has been growing ever since winning in Cincinnati. I wouldn’t be shocked at all if Pliskova wins this match after what we’ve seen the last two weeks. However, Kerber has been the most consistent player all season long and has given us no reason not to continue backing her. (Even though I did against Caroline Wozniacki)

This match is closer to a toss-up than what we would have thought before, but I have Kerber winning her second grand slam of the season.
