Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka meet Sunday afternoon in the 2016 US Open Final.

Novak Djokovic is coming off a four set win over Gael Monfils that took 34 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 68 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic had his fair share of struggles with his service game and looked to be cramping up at times. However, Djokovic found a way to prevail like he usually does and make the shots when they mattered most. Djokovic should be well rested considering he’s played just three full matches all tournament long. Djokovic has a chance to win his 13th career grand slam title and third US Open title. Djokovic has won 20 of his last 21 matches on hard court.

USA TODAY Sports

Stan Wawrinka is coming off a four set win over Kei Nishikori that took 40 games to decide. In the victory, Wawrinka won 76 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Wawrinka pretty much dominated the match after dropping the first set and took advantage of 41 unforced errors from Nishikori. Wawrinka has been very impressive with his first serve this tournament and will have to continue a high percentage if he hopes to win this match. Wawrinka must also be aggressive and push the top player in the world around the court. Wawrinka hopes to win his third career grand slam title and first US Open title. Wawrinka has won 10 of his last 12 matches on hard court.

These two have met 25 times in the past and Djokovic has won 21 of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Paris Masters, a match Djokovic won in three sets. Djokovic has beaten Wawrinka in four of the last five meetings and his last loss came in the 2015 French Open. Djokovic is 15-2 against Wawrinka on hard court.

The head to head numbers are quite glaring and Djokovic has had far less wear and tear on his body to get to this point. You’re talking about a guy who has played just three full matches this tournament. Yes, he’s had struggles at times, but betting against a rested Djokovic with a title on the line simply isn’t wise.

Djokovic should win his third US Open title.
