Gael Monfils and Kevin Anderson play Tuesday in the second round of the 2016 Shanghai Rolex Masters.
Gael Monfils is fresh off losing in the semifinals of Tokyo after dropping a tight two set match to Nick Kyrgios. Monfils has made at least the quarterfinals in five of his last six tournaments and is looking like a guy who will qualify for the ATP Finals at the end of the season. Monfils has been solid pretty much all season long, as his serve is sharp and his returns have been a lot more consistent. Monfils has been all business and no longer gives games away with his silly antics just to please the crowd. Monfils has become a much more trustworthy player, and it’s paying off now that he’s back in the top-10 and playing some of his best tennis at 30 years old. Monfils has won 10 of his last 13 matches on hard court.
USA TODAY Sports
Kevin Anderson is coming off a straight sets win over Zhe Li that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Anderson won 87 percent of his first serve points and 75 percent of his second serve points. Anderson has had just a very tough year that’s included injuries and just poor play overall. Anderson has now fallen outside of the top-40 and has struggled big time with his return. On the bright side, Anderson did make the quarterfinals in Chengdu and is coming off a dominating performance in which he got 72 percent of his first serves in play. We all know what Anderson is capable of when in good form, but we haven’t seen that from the South African in quite some time. Anderson has won five of his last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played four times in the past and Monfils has won all four meetings. The most recent match was in this years Madrid Masters, a match Monfils won in straight sets. Anderson has won just one set against Monfils, which was in Bangkok of 2012. This will be the third time these two meet on hard court.
Monfils has owned Anderson in their short history and that says a lot considering we’re seeing some of his best tennis right now. Anderson has been a sinking ship for much of this season and no longer scares opponents the way he did in the past with his powerful serve. Monfils should be able to win this match in straight sets like he has three times against Anderson.
Monfils advances with ease into the third round.
