Novak Djokovic and Fabio Fognini play Tuesday in the second round of the 2016 Shanghai Rolex Masters.

Novak Djokovic enters this match well rested as he hasn’t played a match since losing the US Open Final to Stan Wawrinka. Djokovic has had a few hiccups recently with early exits in the Monte Carlo Masters, Wimbledon and most recently the Olympics, and he was dealing with anngiing injuries in New York as well. Djokovic is still the best player in the world when healthy and has proven he can beat most players even when not at his best. However, Djokovic has clearly shown some chinks in the armour lately and opponents have to think they have a chance to at the very least compete given his recent form. Djokovic may not be unbeatable after all. Djokovic has won 12 of his last 14 matches on hard court.

Novak Djokovic vs. Fabio Fognini 2016 Shanghai Rolex Masters Pick, Odds, Prediction

Fabio Fognini is coming off a straight sets win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Fognini won 72 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. The concern is that Fognini did have nine double faults, a number he can’t have if he’s going to have any chance of pulling off this massive upset. Fognini has really had a hard time getting over the hump, as his last successful tournament was maybe making the third round of the olympics before falling to Andy Murray in three sets. Of course, a lot of that has to do with the fact Fognini is a much better clay player than he is on hard court. Still Fognini’s competitiveness and speed makes him a tough matchup regardless of the surface. Fognini has split his last eight matches on hard court.

These two have played eight times in the past and Djokovic has won seven of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2014 Australian Open, a match Djokovic won in straight sets. Fognini’s only win over Djokovic came in the 2006 Rome Masters. Djokovic is 4-0 against Fognini on hard court.

Djokovic should be ready to go given so much time off and Fognini can’t be too confident given their history. Fognini also isn’t the best player on hard court and is often outmatched. Djokovic should be able to win this match rather easily like he has so much in the past against Fognini.

Give me Djokovic in straight sets.
