TV: Tennis

Andy Murray and Steve Johnson square off Wednesday in the round of 32 in the 2016 Shanghai Rolex Masters.

Andy Murray is fresh off winning the China Open, which was his fifth title of the 2016 season. Murray continues to put together a ridiculous season that includes nine final appearances and at least the quarterfinals in his last 10 events. Murray is serving well, aggressive on his returns and seems to always find a way to win the big points. About the only concern with Murray at this point is the workload, as he’s played a ton of tennis overall and 23 matches since his olympic run. Murray has to be gassed at this point in the season and has to find a way to keep himself somewhat fresh for the ATP Finals at the end of the year. Murray has won 10 of his last 12 matches on hard court.

Andy Murray vs. Steve Johnson 2016 Shanghai Rolex Masters Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Steve Johnson is coming off a straight sets win over Martin Klizan that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Johnson won 85 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. Johnson has had his breakout season this year and has come really close to breaking inside the top-20 for the first time in his career. Johnson has gained confidence over the last few months and looks like he’s starting to believe he belongs on the same court as some of the top players in the world. Now comes the consistency, as Johnson hasn’t looked sharp since making the quarterfinals in Cincinnati. Johnson has two career victories over top-10 players, both coming this season. Johnson has won six of his last 10 matches on hard court.

These two have played twice in the past and Murray has won both meetings. The most recent match was in this year's olympics, a match Murray won in three sets. The other match was in the 2015 Shanghai Masters, a match Murray won in 18 games.

Johnson has kind of taken a backseat recently and has struggled to find his form overall. You really need to be at the top of your game to knockoff Murray with the way he’s played all season. You guys know I’ve said time and time again that Murray is playing the best tennis of his life. Not sure Johnson has enough to get his third win over a top-10 player.

Give me Murray in straight competitive sets.
