TV:

Agnieszka Radwanska and Svetlana Kuznetsova meet in the first match of the tennis 2016 WTA Championships.

Agnieszka Radwanska has been hot down the stretch and is playing in her sixth straight WTA Finals. Radwanska has made at least the quarterfinals in four straight events and has made three finals this season overall. Radwanska has won 16 straight sets and is playing terrific defense, putting great pressure on her opponent to be effective with their serve. Radwanska may be in the best form of any player in this tournament considering she hasn’t dropped a set in eight straight matches and only one of those sets needed a tiebreaker to be decided. Radwanska hasn’t been bounced in the round robin stages of the WTA Finals since the 2013 season. Radwanska has won 10 of her last 12 matches on hard court.

USA TODAY Sports

Svetlana Kuznetsova is fresh off a victory over Daria Gavrilova to win the Kremlin Cup which stole a spot from Johanna Konta to participate in this tournament. A lack of rest could end up hurting Kuznetsova considering she’s playing on short notice, but she has to be thrilled to play in her first WTA Finals since the 2009 season. Kuznetsova has won nine of her last 11 sets and is the oldest player in this tournament at 31 years old. Kuznetsova has built some serious confidence in her last couple of tournaments and should be able to play pressure free considering the lack of expectations overall. Kuznetsova has never made it out of the round robin stages in the WTA Finals. Kuznetsova has won eight of her last 11 matches on hard court.

These two have played 16 times in the past and Kuznetsova has won 12 of those meetings. The most recent match was in Wuhan on this year and Kuznetsova won in three sets. Radwanska’s last win over Kuznetsova took place in the 2014 Madrid Masters. Kuznetsova has won eight of the last nine matches against Radwanska.

The head to head between these two players is quite impressive, as Kuznetsova has dominated Radwanska over the years. You have to consider backing Kuznetsova just off of that alone. However, Radwanska is in better form overall and has a major rest advantage while Kuznetsova is traveling on short notice and just had to play her way into the tournament.

Radwanska is somebody who could win the WTA Finals and you have to like her to start by winning this match.
