Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dominika Cibulkova meet in the semifinals of the tennis 2016 WTA Championships.

Svetlana Kuznetsova is coming off a three set loss to Garbine Muguruza that took 22 games to decide. In the losing effort, Kuznetsova won 54 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Kuznetsova started off strong in her last match but hit a will in the second set, winning just one game in the final two sets. Fatigue was a concern for Kuznetsova heading into this tournament and it clearly was the deciding factor against Muguruza. Playing another three set match likely doesn’t help matters for the 31-year-old Kuznetsova, and it’ll be interesting to see if she can find enough in the tank to make the finals. Kuznetsova has proven us wrong in the past, so there’s a chance she can bounce back. Kuznetsova hopes to make her fourth final appearance of the season. Kuznetsova has won 10 of her last 14 matches on hard court.

Svetlana Kuznetsova vs. Dominika Cibulkova 2016 WTA Championships Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Dominika Cibulkova is coming off a straight sets win over Simona Halep that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Cibulkova won 79 percent of her first serve points and 32 percent of her second serve points. Cibulkova finds a way in the semifinals despite winning just one of her three matches and absolutely stinking up the joint with her second serve. In three matches, Cibulkova has won just 25 of 62 second serve points. However, Cibulkova was flawless on her first serve in her last match and continues to bring that feistiness to the court that usually helps up her level of play. Cibulkova also has a major rest advantage over the older Kuznetsova. Cibulkova hopes to make her seventh final appearance of the season. Cibulkova has won seven of her last 12 matches on hard court.

These two have played eight times in the past and Cibulkova has won five of those meetings. The most recent match was in Wuhan of this year, a match Cibulkova won in three sets. The other matches happened in 2011 or earlier. Kuznetsova has not won a match against Cibulkova since Beijing in 2008.

If you watched the Kuznetsova match, you know she’s unbackable in this spot. Fatigue was the main concern for Kuznetsova heading into this tournament, as she was a last second addition and played nine sets in her first three matches. Kuznetsova had nothing in her final two sets and clearly hit a wall. It’s impossible to expect a turnaround against the energetic and rested Cibulkova.

This match has the potential to be quick and painless. Cibulkova should win this match.
