Bryan Vasquez and Javier Fortuna fight Friday night at the Barclays Center for the vacant WBA junior lightweight title.
Bryan Vasquez enters this fight with a 34-1 record that includes 18 knockouts. Vasquez has won his last five fights, which includes a December victory over Sergio Thompson. Vasquez has quickly climbed up the ranks at 27 years old and his only loss came against Takashi Uchiyama back in 2012. Vasquez does a great job of controlling the ring and has an impressive jab that his opponents much watch out for. Vasquez relies on timing and will land a nasty uppercut when dealing with over aggressiveness. Vasquez’s main weakness is that he often opens himself up to big hits, as we witnessed in his fight against Uchiyama. Vasquez must be very careful if he’s going to win this fight. This will be the first time Vasquez has fought in Brooklyn.

Javier Fortuna enters this fight with a 27-0-1 record that includes 19 knockouts. Fortuna is coming off a December victory over Miguel Taveras and has proven he’s one of the best in his weight class despite being just 24 years old. Fortuna is a very aggressive fighter and packs knockout power in both hands. Fortuna is very quick and will often beat his opponents to the punch. There’s a reason four of Fortuna’s last six fights have been knockouts. Fortuna’s weakness would be his wacky fundamentals, as his footwork is sloppy at times and his hand placement can lead to some dangerous counters if not careful. Still, Fortuna enters this fight extremely confident and has even predicted a knockout. This will be the first time Fortuna has fought in Brooklyn.
This should be a hell of a fight between two fighters looking to take that next step in their careers. Both have held their own against talented boxers and each have weaknesses that can be taken advantage of by others strengths.
However, Fortuna is in better form and overall the better fighter. Fortuna has the athleticism, power and quick hands that really give him the advantage here. While Vasquez will have his chances to counter, I see Fortuna being too much in this fight.
