Daniel Ramirez and Jayson Velez fight Thursday night at the Belasco Theater in a 10 round bout.
Daniel Ramirez enters this fight with a 11-2 record that includes five knockouts. Ramirez has split his last four fights and is coming off a November loss to Eric Hunter. Ramirez has some quickness to his game and likes to work the body when he can. Despite being a small boxer, Ramirez has underrated power and can land some strong punches when countering. Ramirez’s weakness is obvious, as he doesn’t have much experience in bigger fights, and his defense certainly needs work, as he sometimes spends too much time trading punches. Ramirez also hasn’t proven he can last a long bout, as majority of his fights have been four rounds. This will be Ramirez’s first career fight in Los Angeles.
USA TODAY Sports
Jayson Velez enters this fight with a 22-0-1 record that includes 16 knockouts. Velez looks to bounce back from his controversial November draw against Evgeny Gradovich. Velez has good length for his weight class and has quick hands, as he loves to mix in combos and win rounds by being aggressive. Velez has knockout power in both hands, which is why only six of his wins weren’t knockouts. Jayson Velez’s main weakness is that he’s sometimes overly aggressive and can leave himself open to counters. Velez has to be more patient if he hopes to take that next step in his career. This will be Velez’s first career fight in Los Angeles.
Honestly, this seems like a warm up fight for Velez, who needs to get his confidence back after being outboxed in his last match against Gradovich. Ramirez doesn’t have the experience or overall talent to hang in this fight.
Look for Velez to pick up the win rather quickly and probably his 17th career knockout in the process.
