Carl Frampton and Alejandro Gonzalez Jr fight Saturday afternoon at the Don Haskins Center.
Carl Frampton enters this fight with a 20-0 record that includes 14 knockouts. This will be Frampton’s fourth fight since 2014, and he’s coming off a February win over Chris Avalos. Frampton is an extremely well balanced fighter who can beat you multiple ways on the offensive end but also has an above-average defense. Frampton can beat you on the inside or outside and is an accurate puncher. Frampton also has a great feel for a fight and knows when it's time to put his opponent away, as five of his last six fights ended in knockout. Frampton hasn’t shown a weakness yet, but overconfidence could hurt him and the fact he’s fighting away from home for the first time ever. This will be Frampton’s first fight in Texas and first fight in the United States.
USA TODAY Sports
Alejandro Gonzalez Jr enters this fight with a 25-1-2 record that includes 15 knockouts. This will be Gonzalez's first fight this year, as his last bout was a December win over Gonzalo Garcia. Gonzalez is a fighter on the rise at just 22 years old, and he’s uses that youth to his advantage, as he works hard each round and throws a ton of punches. Gonzalez is very aggressive and isn’t going to be shortchanged against anyone. Gonzalez has fast hands and is able to take advantage of being just 5’9”. The concern with Gonzalez is that he hasn’t fought anybody worth mentioning besides Juan Alberto Rosas, a fight in which he lost. This is Gonzalez’s second fight in Texas and just his second in the United States.
Gonzalez is a solid fighter who should put up a far better fight than what the odds indicate. However, Frampton is in a completely different class offensively and defensively, and he’s bound to continue shooting up the boxing ranks.
I look for Frampton to land many power punches and win this fight in knockout.
